Curate Content to Get Real Twitter Followers

A couple of months ago I listened to Dan Zarrella on the Science of Social Media. It was an older webinar, but it still had a lot of great information.

In fact, about a month after I saw the one that was a couple of years old, he held a newer one with some of the same information.

During the webinar, he mentioned that user accounts on Twitter that tweeted more links, generally had more followers. After listening I decided to try it out, I wanted to grow my followers, so I started sharing more links.

Since then, I have been trying to tweet 7-10 links or articles a day, and my twitter count has almost doubled from 1800 in 2 months. These are real twitter followers, too, with active accounts, no automation.

Before I was following other people, and getting followed back at about 10-20% but with curating content I don’t have to spend the same amount of time, because I am already looking at these articles. Now I use Fan Page Robot and just add each of the articles to my queue.

Here Is How I Get Real Twitter Followers:

  • Subscribe to blogs via RSS (yes I still use google reader for now, transitioning to Feedly though)
  • Name each of the subscriptions by their twitter name
  • Organize the feeds by category (inbound marketing, social media, etc.)
  • Set up a Buffer schedule
  • Look at articles everyday
  • Buffer those you want to share with your followers
  • Mention the author when you tweet their link
  • If you have time, go to the article, and highlight a quote, then hit the Buffer icon, this will usually get you more traffic and exposure
  • Login to Twitter and connect with your new followers, answer retweets, mentions, etc

This has been really easy for me, and I have a lot more followers. Feedly is going to make the transition from Google Reader seamless they say, so even if you start now, you can still access the blogs and subscriptions.
