Which Social Media Platforms Should You Use?

There are new social media platforms everyday. Sometimes smaller ones break through and become amazingly popular like the recent explosions of Pinterest and Instagram but there are thousands that are smaller, and more targeted for specific groups of interest, professional groups, non-profits, and causes.

Obviously, it would be more than difficult to use all of these platforms to market your business, so which should you use?

That is the question I would like to answer today. From my experience in social media, I have spent a lot of time in the following social media platforms:

  • LinkedIn
  • Facebook
  • Twitter
  • Google Plus

I will be honest I do not have much experience with Google + but I have seen the demographics of the users.

Business to Business- LinkedIn
LinkedIn is said to be the best place to sell you business to business services and products. Most of the users on LinkedIn are professionals, and while many think of it as a place to find jobs (it is) it can be so much more. In fact, a recent post by Social Media Examiner shows you exactly how useful this professional social platform is. Check it out: LinkedIn Case Study

Business to Consumer- Facebook
Having over 950 million accounts means it’s difficult not to find your market on Facebook, this is a great place to market your business, of course though, Facebook’s restrictive features make it difficult to only use this platform for Business to Consumer, but you can’t beat the number of people there.

Both- Twitter
I would use Twitter in addition to one of the other platforms, it is great for both B2B and B2C, most of the users make over 60k a year, so it’s a great place to find clients and make business connections. It has 500 million users and few restrictions, so it’s easy to see why people love using it.

Google Plus is said to have a user base similar to Twitter, many professionals, but a good amount of consumers who like to spend, the problem is that it has such a small amount of users compared to the others. It is growing though, and will most likely continue to, as it has so many great features and Google is constantly adding to it. Keep an eye on this one, because at some point you will definitely want to incorporate this platform into your social strategy.

Which social media platforms do you use and why? Tell me about them in the comments section.
